Hey Guys,
The sides are Q/S if my fading memory serves me, and the backs.....MRW is a very small tree and it is fairly uncommon to find full Q/S backs. Almost always you will be getting flitch cut 4 pc. backs that have been joined to form two bookmatcked peices.

Hi Brian

I have been offered some Ziricote, but the boards are not wide enough for backs, do you think the techinue used with the Madagascan of doing a 4 piece back, would be suitable with Ziricote ?

Is it just a question of making the join like you would when joining the two halves ?

Well,
You can but I don't know if it would be the best way to do it. Ziricote is a very brittle wood and when resawing it it can curl and in this case it could give you an "S" shape curl to deal with, it is important to sticker it right away. It might be less hasstle to keep and eye out for a board large enough for your needs. Sometimes I see boards large enough for backs on ebay, just make sure that you ask the seller about any cracks in the wood. This is just my opinion and I only know what I know so if anyone out there doesn't agree please chime in.

I've used narrow ziricote for backs before, and have seen others do it if the grain is nice enough like this one.

On a four piece back do you reinforce each of the jpins or just the center join as normal ?

yep...that's mine. And of course, it will crack eventually because it's Mexican Crackwood. The name "Ziricote" is just an alias.

Russell, you don't have to reinforce each joint, but I tend to think it's not a bad idea. I did one guitar of MC (aka ziricote) where I reinforced each joint. It still cracked everywhere else. Just keep a bottle of CA handy when you use the stuff...
